You can do both

[Shared with permission from a white friend who is married to a police officer.]

“I can’t help but automatically feel such a HEAVY HEART thinking of how (he), I, and our family, feel attacked and targeted. How unsafe I feel. How I’d like to be invisible. Wear the blue line proudly, without thought of attack on myself, vehicle, home. The look of terror in (our child)’s eyes when she overheard (him) talk about people targeting homes with patrol cars. And honestly, seeing at that exact moment, a child with dark skin, terrified, confused. I can remove all signs of law enforcement from our home. He can choose (outside of work) not to be seen in his uniform, PoC can’t so the same.”

So yes, you can do both.

You can support law enforcement AND acknowledge your privilege as a white person.

In fact, you can use the fear you may be feeling RIGHT NOW during times of widespread unrest to help you understand a bit more about what the black community faces daily.
